In this compilation of 2 weeks in Vietnam itineraries, I will share 6 travel itineraries featuring Vietnam’s famous locations and how many days to spend on each. You can choose between making your trip filled with exciting places to explore or taking it slow and soaking up all of its beauty.
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING VIETNAM

When it comes to planning your trip and writing an itinerary, there are a few things that are important to know. This helps ensure that you won’t be arriving in Vietnam to learn that it’s rainy season or that you actually have to pay with cash nearly everywhere.
When is the best time to go to Vietnam
The best time to visit Vietnam depends on what you want to do and where you want to go. March and April are the months with low rainfall and the temperature is still bearable.
Vietnam is 1,600 km/1,00 miles long. This makes the temperature and weather in the north, central, and south of Vietnam, quite different. The north experiences winter where the temperature could drop to zero Celsius (32°F), this leads to muddy and foggy mountains which become dangerous to hike.
In the south, November to December are a pretty great time to come, but the chances of rain are high. February would be an ideal time to explore southern Vietnam.
If you want to visit Ha Long Bay for cruises, March to May or September to November will be perfect. But for Phu Quoc, November to February is the best time to come. The central of Vietnam is prone to rain, but there’s a perfect window from February to July.
Are 2 weeks enough for Vietnam
If you plan to go drive a motorbike across the country to explore the entirety of it, 2 weeks might not be enough. Backpacking in Vietnam is highly recommended to be done at least for 3 weeks. However, it doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and see lots of places.
For 14 days, you can focus on 2 major cities and plan day trips. If you really want to motorbike around Vietnam, you can rent one in any big city and drive on your own to get to day trip sites.
Let’s say you’re in Hanoi, you can drive on your own and head to Ha Long Bay or Trang An. For Ho Chi Minh City, you can take a day trip or stay for a night at Cat Tien National Park or Vung Tau.
In Central of Vietnam, you can stay in Da Nang, rent a motorbike and motorbike the Hai Van Pass or get to Hoi An and Hue on your own.
Getting around
Vietnam probably has one of the trickiest and most chaotic traffic in the world, but the thing is, it kinda works! Locals use motorbikes as the main mode of transportation, if you are brave enough, you can rent one as well which is awesome to get around the cities.
To get from one city or one town to another, you can either take a sleeper bus or take a domestic flight. Fortunately, the government turned many military bases into domestic flights. Flying around Vietnam is quite easy and very affordable.
There’s also the train that runs from north to south. It’s affordable, and offers a scenic way to travel, but a lot slower and has limited stops along the way.
Getting around the cities, you can install ride-hailing apps such as Grab, Be, and GoJek. On those apps, you can order a private car, taxi, and motorbike taxi.
Language and currency
Vietnam’s official language is Vietnamese, which is a tonal language that uses a modified Latin script alphabet. A few decades ago, the government opened the country to foreign teachers, the goal was to advance Vietnam’s skills in the English language.
Today, most young people in middle age in big cities such as Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City speak great English. Restaurant and hotel staff can also converse in English well, while menus often both have English and Vietnamese. If you are travelling in smaller towns, you can simply use a translator app, it’s not perfect but it does the job.
The country also has their own currency – the Vietnamese Dong (VND). There are ATMs almost everywhere in the country; however, most of them have a maximum limit of $150-$200 (3 million to 5 million VND) per transaction. You might find some rare ATMs that will allow you to withdraw $400 (9.5 million VND) at a time.
Most travel agencies, hotels, and tour agencies accept payments in major currencies such as USD, GBP, Euro, CAD, AUD, and JPY. You will receive the change in local currency.
Most businesses related to tourism such as hotels, restaurants, and tour agencies accept bank card payments, but food stalls are usually cashed only basis. You can exchange your foreign cash (major currencies) in banks, gold shops, accommodations, and even travel agencies.
2 weeks in Vietnam travel budget
Vietnam is an affordable destination; from accommodation, food, to tours. Your main flight to and from Vietnam is probably the most expensive cost of your trip depending on where you’re coming from. Here’s some cost ideas:
- Affordable: For budget travelers, expect to spend around $900 to $1000. This includes staying in hostels, eating at local food stalls, using public transportation, and enjoying free or low-cost attractions.
- Mid-Range: A comfortable trip with nicer accommodations, some meals at restaurants, internal flights or private transportation, and paid activities can cost between $1,200 to $1,800.
- Luxury: For a luxurious experience, including top hotels, fine dining, private tours, and exclusive experiences, the cost can range from $3,000 to $6,000 or more.
Visa
Visitors with passports from Southeast Asia (ASEAN) don’t need a visa to enter and travel around Vietnam. The number of days depends on which passport from ASEAN you have.
While some travellers from Belarus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the UK can enjoy a 15-day free visa, countries not mentioned must apply for an evisa beforehand, the evisa is valid for 30-days and visa on arrival (still must be applied online) is valid up to 90 days.
Most countries in Africa and some parts of the Middle East must apply for a visa at the nearest Vietnamese consulate or embassy.
Travel arrangement tips
Here are some travel sites for your travel arrangements. If you plan to visit Vietnam during peak season, make sure to book your accommodation in advance. Don’t worry, many of these services allow you to cancel for free or for a small fee.

Dalat for 2 days
From Mui Ne, the only way to get to Dalat is by taking a 4-hour bus. The road can be windy, so remember to have motion pills with you. Dalat is a highland region where the weather is pretty much the same all year round.
While here, you can visit waterfalls, pick fresh strawberries, and go on lots of hiking. It is known as the flower city to the locals. If you’re looking for adrenaline-infused activity, why don’t you try canyoning in Dalat, a unique activity in this part of Vietnam?
Hoi An/Da Nang for 5 days
Luckily, you can fly directly from Dalat to Da Nang which is only an hour. You can decide between Da Nang and Hoi An as your base, they are only a 30-minute drive from one another.
Da Nang is a good place if you like skyscrapers and late-night events, while Hoi An is a ricefield town and more tranquil.
These two cities offer very different activities. Da Nang is where you do plenty of boat tours, visit historical locations, and check out waterparks. While in Hoi An, you will be exploring ancient towns on a bicycle, trying out a traditional basket boat, and learning how to make the famous Vietnamese lanterns.
Hanoi for 2 days
Finish your 2 weeks in Vietnam by heading to Hanoi. You can take a flight directly from Da Nang which takes an hour.
Hanoi is an awesome city to finish your trip in because you will get to see more historical places, party, eat more authentic food, and, of course, go shopping for souvenirs. Hanoi has plenty of direct flights to Asia, Europe, North America, and Oceania.
Itinerary #4: Hanoi, Sa Pa, Ha Long Bay, Hue
If you love being around nature, hiking, camping, and other adventures, this next itinerary is perfect. Hanoi, Sa Pa, and Ha Long Bay will keep you busy doing outdoor activities. From hiking the rice paddies of Sa Pa, kayaking through the limestone cliffs and caves of Ha Long, to visiting the world’s biggest cave near Hue.
You will also get a glimpse of Vietnamese culture, eat the best local dishes, and get to enjoy the beach on the coast of the East Vietnam Sea.
- Day 1-4: Hanoi
- Day 5-7: Sa Pa
- Day 8-11: Ha Long Bay
- Day 12-14: Hue
Hanoi for 4 days
Start your trip by arriving in Hanoi, the capital city. For 4 days, you can visit historical spots, wander around the Old Quarter, and try out local dishes. You can even book a day trip to Mai Chau, Perfume Pagoda, or Trang An from Hanoi.
Sa Pa for 3 days
Make your way to Sa Pa by taking an overnight bus or train. If you want a hassle-free trip, you can book a hiking tour and you will be picked up from your house.
Transportation, accommodation, a local guide, and food will all be included. Spending 3 days in Sa Pa means that you can even go to Fansipan, the highest point in the region of Indochina.
Ha Long Bay for 3 days
You have to go back to Hanoi from Sa Pa to reach Ha Long Bay. You can again book a cruise trip for 2 nights and 3 days.
This tour will include transport from and back to your hotel, accommodation in a boat, food, water activities, a guide, and entrance fees. You should bring some cash if you plan to do cooking classes or buy souvenirs.

Hue for 4 days
You can either take a flight from Hai Phong (the main town near Ha Long Bay) or take a bus back to Hanoi and then take a flight to Hue. Hue is an incredible city to do cooking classes and sign up for food tours as it’s one of the best cities in Vietnam for food.
In this area, you can also visit ancient towns and ruins that showcase Vietnam’s cultural and historical values.
Itinerary #5: Ha Long Bay, Hoi An/Da Nang, Nha Trang, Mui Ne, Phu Quoc
Our final itinerary is all about water activities and soaking up the best beaches in Vietnam. If you start in Phu Quoc, there is an international airport there, but if you want to begin your trip in Ha Long Bay, you will have to fly into Hanoi and then take a bus or private service to Ha Long Bay.
Ha Long Bay, Da Nang, Nha Trang, and Mui Ne are all on the coast of Vietnam, while Phu Quoc is on an island southwest of the country, very close to Cambodia.
In this itinerary, you will be kayaking through Ha Long Bay, taking boat tours in Da Nang, visiting a theme park on a private island in Nha Trang, try some kite surfing in Mui Ne, then go to water parks and do some snorkelling in Phu Quoc.

- Day 5-7: Ha Long Bay
- Day 8-11: Hoi An
- Day 11-14 Nha Trang
Hanoi for 3 days
3 days in Hanoi can be a bit tough but it’s possible. I recommend you spend your first 48 hours exploring the city. You can either book a city tour or wander on your own.
The next day, plan to book a day trip to spots outside Hanoi for your third day, you should also look into booking a tour for Sa Pa. You will have plenty of time to get back to your hotel and get ready for your overnight transport to Sa Pa.
Sa Pa for 2 days
The travel time from Hanoi to Sa Pa is about 7-8 hours. If you booked a tour, your accommodation is already arranged including all the excursions during your stay.
2 days won’t be enough to hike the rice paddies and peak Fansipan, you most likely have to choose between the two. Make your way back to Hanoi, which is inevitable to get to Ha Long Bay.
Ha Long Bay for 2 days
You can of course explore Ha Long Bay on your own, but you will be more relaxed and able to enjoy your visit if you book a cruise tour.
You don’t have to waste time figuring out which bus to take or how to get on a boat to visit the islands. 1 night and 2 days in Ha Long Bay is enough to explore the top attractions.
Hoi An or Da Nang for 3 days
You can fly from Hai Phong (near Ha Long Bay) or back to Hanoi to take a flight to Hoi An. You will actually have to fly to Da Nang and then take a 30-minute back to Hoi An.
Da Nang is a more city-like location with skyscrapers. While Hoi An has traditional houses sandwiched between farmlands and the coastline.
Since these two are very close to one another, you can easily visit attractions in both cities easily. To make the most out of your trip, book a package or combo tours that highlight all the important places to see. Don’t forget to enjoy the beach and other watersports too.

Nha Trang for 4 days
From Da Nang, you can take a direct flight to Nha Trang. This coastal city is the perfect way to end your trip. You can simply enjoy the beach, go to a private island that has a massive theme park and resort, book a diving or snorkelling tour, or enjoy the food.
Nha Trang is a Russian melting pot. Many restaurants and businesses here are owned and managed by Russians who found their place in Nha Trang and decided to build a life. While Russian tourists love visiting Nha Trang for its scenic spots. Some Vietnamese who work in the tourism industry speak Russian.
You should be able to find a flight home from the international airport near Nha Trang (Cam Ranh) or fly from here to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City for better flight options.
